Supportive Services for Family Freedom

The CLIC is working to implement strategies to provide emotional support, acceptance, and positive affirmation of all members of the family. This program provides life-skills training, legal consulting services, workshops to promote positive behaviors, and job readiness skills training. Children in this program also have access to the services in The CLIC for Boys and The CLIC for Girls programs.

Negative Impact

As the number of incarcerated individuals continues to grow, the impact extends to the children, families and communities outside of the jail/prison. Statistics show that 2.7 million US children have a parent who is incarcerated, and more than 5 million (7%) of all US children have had a parent in prison or jail.

Negative Consequences

Parental incarceration and the disruption of family relationships can produce negative outcomes for children, including poverty, poor academic performance, aggression, depression, delinquency, feelings of shame, social stigma and substance abuse. When a parent is incarcerated, the impact on the children are often hidden. Incarcerated mothers and fathers are unable to work on parenting skills that may be necessary for reunification, and separation interferes with the ability of parent and child to form or maintain a strong bond.

Positive Influences

Children of incarcerated parents are oftentimes overlooked as it relates to services. CLIC seeks to provide support services specifically designed for this demographic by providing emotional support, acceptance and positive affirmations for all members of the family. We provide life-skills training, legal consulting services, workshops to promote positive behaviors, mental health counseling and job readiness skills training where appropriate.

Positive Outcome

We provide a safe haven for children/youth to feel comfortable discussing their feelings and struggles as they deal with the reality of having an incarcerated parent(s). Children in this program have access to services provided by CLIC for Girls and CLIC for boys programs to include monthly group activities and one-on-one mentoring.
